About the Green Movement

The Israel Green Movement – Hatnua Hayeruka – is an environmental and social political party uniting activists, founders of environmental organizations, city council members and academics, philosophers and scientists, who all share the awareness that it is vital that environmental and social issues be on the government’s agenda. We feel that the environmental and social worldview must play a central role in the political discourse and that a deeply rooted, authentic and comprehensive green party must be an integral part of the political map in Israel.

Hatnua Heyeruka is an expression of a progressive and coherent worldview that has something to say about every aspect of life, and unites environmental, social, economic, civil and humanitarian principles into a single comprehensive philosophy. Being green does not limit us to a narrow concern for maintaining the landscape and its flora and fauna. Green means the broadest and most articulate political agenda offered to Israel’s citizens. Green means concern not only for the environment but also for the people who live in the environment and their welfare, happiness and future. Green means supporting all those who are hurt by environmental and social injustice. Most importantly, green means a resolute belief in change and our ability to generate transformations.

The Israeli public thirsts for a kind of politics, suitable to the twenty-first century. Israeli politics suffers from several long-standing chronic ills: the lack of long-term planning and thought, the erosion of solidarity and tolerance, extreme polarization, a “might makes right” mindset, sectarian interests groups, unethical conduct, even corruption and criminality. The crisis in Israeli politics means a crisis in the strength of Israel’s democracy. Too many Israelis have abandoned the belief in their power to affect anything in their lives and in the possibility that something may yet change. The mandate of the present is to create a different politics, one that can meet the challenges of today by adopting different conceptions based on a reevaluated set of priorities and with a renewed spirit of idealism. A politics of hope – that is the vision that motivates Hatnua Hayeruka.
