The Israel Green Movement Responds to Government Decision: “Establishing new settlements on the outskirts of Arad – unfortunate shortsightedness on the Israeli government’s part”

In response to the Israeli government decision this Sunday (October 30, 2011) to establish ten new settlements on the outskirts of Arad in the Negev, the Israel Green Movement expresses regret over the faulty planning policy guiding the government. The program that was approved is liable to cause a significant weakening of the urban center in the region, especially Arad, and damage the future urban fabric of the cities in the Negev.
Party Co-chair Rachelli Tidhar Caner says: “The current plan blatantly contradicts the stated policy of Israeli governments since the 1980s to stop establishing new settlements in favor of strengthening existing population centers.

The Israel Green Movement: “The Knesset Needs an Environmental Party”

“Israel simply cannot afford not to have a green party in the Knesset,” said Cem Özdemir, Co-chair of the German political party Alliance ‘90/The Greens on Thursday (February 2, 2012), while being hosted by the Israel Green Movement at the IGM’s headquarters in Tel Aviv.

The Greens in Germany is considered the largest environmental party in the world. After having served in the German government in the early 2000s, the party is now in the opposition with about 12.5% of the seats in the Bundestag. 2011 polls have shown the party gaining strength. This is attributed primarily to the Fukushima disaster of last year.

About the Green Movement

The Israel Green Movement – Hatnua Hayeruka – is an environmental and social political party uniting activists, founders of environmental organizations, city council members and academics, philosophers and scientists, who all share the awareness that it is vital that environmental and social issues be on the government’s agenda. We feel that the environmental and social worldview must play a central role in the political discourse and that a deeply rooted, authentic and comprehensive green party must be an integral part of the political map in Israel.

The Council of Experts

The Green Movement is unique on the Israeli political scene for having, at its inception, decided to establish a Council of Experts to help the political entity make informed decisions on policy. Therefore, unlike most other politicians in Israel, the leaders and activists of the Green Movement are more likely than most politicians to take positions rooted in fact and scientific research.
